Basic Website Design: Creation, Images, Writing, and SEO

The Project: Create a Simple, Professional Website for a Master Plumber to Make a Good First Impression

I’ve worked online since 2014 as a reporter, web editor/manager, copywriter, and marketer. Through that experience, I naturally picked up some web design skills, so I offer that service for businesses that need simple websites. Because I am not a web designer by trade, I don’t charge an excessive amount for it either, around $500 to $1000 bucks for something basic.

The other bit of good news is, that because I’m a writer, you can get an all-in-one deal vs having to hire a copywriter and a designer separately.

For example, I recently made a website for a master plumber. The dude can repipe your whole house but struggled with Google Meet. (I poke fun, but I didn’t know my disposal had a reset button.) He just wanted someone to make a website for him that wasn't overly expensive.

I made him a simple, clean homepage so he could direct customers to his site and be searchable online. The goal was to create something professional that makes a good first impression.

My Tasks: Design, Write, Build, and SEO

I made the entire site with guidance along the way from the client, including:

  • Researching different template ideas for him to choose what he liked

  • Laying out the necessary sections for a homepage

  • Writing copy

  • Setting up WordPress and the hosting platform

  • Searching and downloading professional images to use until he gets professional images taken

  • Making icons for the service sections

  • SEO research and implementation, including image optimization

Results

Check it out! It’s simple, straightforward, and gets the job done. I personally love the little toilet emojis at the very bottom.
